Melrose High Makes Newsweek's Top-Rated School List

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.

Newsweek has ranked the top 2,000 high schools nationally and Melrose High School made the list, coming in at #1,113.  Also making the list was Mystic Valley Regional Charter school, which came in at #163. Melrose High made the Newsweek list in 2012, ranking #832, while Mystic Valley placed 122nd. Melrose High finished 1,287th in 2010. However, Melrose did not make the magazine's top 500 list in 2011.  While Melrose High made the Newsweek list this year, it did not make the top 500 nationally by US News. However, Mystic Valley did, coming in at #8. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see …

Melrose Tripped Up by Belmont, Falling 12-1

Red Raiders fall below .500 at 5-6.

It was a rough Friday for the Melrose High School baseball team, as Belmont tallied three runs in the first and eight in the second leading to a 12-1 loss on Friday at Brandon Grant Field in Belmont. Melrose falls just below the tournament line at 5-6 while Belmont goes over the .500 mark at 6-5. The afternoon started on a perfect note for the Marauders as the first three batters singled and scored on Marauders' clean-up hitter and pitcher Mike Richardson's double clearing the bases.  Red Raider Jon Botelho's double in the fifth scored Melrose's only run of the evening.

Brother: Injured MBTA Officer Richard Donohue Jr. Doing 'Awesome'

Winchester native and MBTA Officer Richard "Dic" Donohue Jr., who was injured in a firefight with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, is recovering well at Mount Auburn Hospital, according to his brother Ed Donohue.

MBTA Officer Richard "Dic" Donohue Jr. is awake and doing "awesome" while recovering at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, his brother and Winchester Police Officer Ed Donohue, told CBS Boston. Donohue Jr., a Winchester native, was wounded during a shoot-out with the Boston Marathon bombing suspect in Watertown. Donohue Jr., 33, of Woburn, was hit in the leg during an early-morning shoot-out on April 19 in Watertown, authorities said. Authorities are investigating whether Donohue Jr. may have been hit by friendly fire. Donohue Jr. is a police officer with the Massachusetts Bay Tranportation Authority, where he has worked for three years. Austin Prep Inducts Melrose Students into National Honor Society

Three students from Melrose were inducted into the National Honor Society at Austin Preparatory School in Reading on Monday, April 8.

The show is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Melrose Performing Arts Center located at Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School.

Acera School Relocating From Melrose to Winchester

With plans to expand in the future, the Acera School will be relocating from Melrose to Lowell Street in Winchester in September.

With its eyes set on expansion, Acera, the Massachusetts School of Science, Creativity and Leadership, will be relocating from Melrose to Winchester in September, according to a press statement. In late March, the Winchester Zoning Board of Appeals approved Anova Inc's request for a special permit and site plan review to relocate the school to Lowell Street.  "Acera will expand into (a) high school in coming years to keep pace with current students," reads the statement. Acera, which serves students from communities such as Somerville, Newton, Belmont, Winchester, Medford, Lexington, Woburn and Melrose, has an enrollment of 59 students in grades K-8, according to founder and co-director Courtney Dickinson.
