Ellis Lane, who started coaching at Wakefield High School in 1970, went on to a storied career in the region.
A coaching legend who spent time at Melrose High School will reportedly be inducted next month into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. According to the SeaCoastOnline.com website in Southern New Hampshire, Ellis Lane’s upcoming induction will be his seventh into a hall of fame, with others including Wakefield and Stoneham High Schools, plus the Massachusetts State Coaches Hall of Fame and the Intercity Baseball League Hall of Fame. More recently in his career, he was also apparently a coach in York, Maine. The report also noted that former Senator Scott Brown is a former player of Lane’s at Wakefield and that he will be inducted to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in June as well. The Melrose High School girls tennis team set the tone at the top and continued its dominance throughout the lineup on Wednesday, toppling host Wilmington. No. 1 singles player Sarah McGowan started things off with a 6-0, 6-2, win while No. 2 Shannon Tarpy followed that up with a 7-5, 6-2, victory of her own as a part of the Red Raiders' 4-1 team win on the road. Natalle Kendall and Lydia Mays combined for a 6-1, 6-3, triumph at No. 1 doubles while Betty Richardson and Emma Leyne won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles to top off the win. Melrose is now 9-5 on the season while the Lady Wildcats fell to 5-11 on the campaign.

Red Raiders fall below .500 at 5-6.
It was a rough Friday for the Melrose High School baseball team, as Belmont tallied three runs in the first and eight in the second leading to a 12-1 loss on Friday at Brandon Grant Field in Belmont. Melrose falls just below the tournament line at 5-6 while Belmont goes over the .500 mark at 6-5. The afternoon started on a perfect note for the Marauders as the first three batters singled and scored on Marauders' clean-up hitter and pitcher Mike Richardson's double clearing the bases. Red Raider Jon Botelho's double in the fifth scored Melrose's only run of the evening.

Melrose Auxiliary Police Captains Mike Batchelder and Dave Dragan, both of Melrose, responded to the Boston Marathon bombing site after having worked several hours doing detail earlier in the day.
Shortly after returning home from working police detail for several hours at the Runner's Village in Hopkinton during the 2013 Boston Marathon, the bombs were detonated near the finish line, according to Melrose Auxiliary Police Captain Mike Batchelder. Batchelder, recently retired after 21 years of service with Melrose-based 1-182 Infantry, completed his 16th Boston Marathon detail (13 with the 182nd Infantry, three with the Melrose Auxiliary) on Monday. He serves as one of two operations officers for the Melrose Auxiliary Police Department, which is comprised of EMTs, sheriffs, university police officers, 182nd Infantry soldiers, recent Reserve Intermittent Police Academy graduates and Federal officers with the Department of Homeland …
Melrose runner Allison Gilgun recalls her 2013 Boston Marathon experience.
Melrose runner Allison Gilgun was having one of the "happiest" races of her life until a pair of bombs exploded near the finish line where her parents were waiting for her to complete the 2013 Boston Marathon. Gilgun, a teacher in Beverly, was running her second Boston Marathon and overall her seventh marathon. "I ran the 2011 Boston Marathon with Team in Training (TNT) which benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin's Lymphoma at 22 in May of 2009 and running Boston was always a dream of mine," she said. The city of Melrose will be having a ceremony and wreath laying to pay tribute to the Boston Marathon victims at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 27 at the Clarence DeMar Memorial at Ell Pond Park, according to a press statement. The event, which is open to the public, will honor "those who were killed and injured in the Boston Marathon bombings and to celebrate the Melrose runners in this year's Boston Marathon," reads the statement. Three people died and more than 100 injured when two bombs detonated near the finish line shortly before 3 p.m. Monday during the race.
