Our top stories of the week ... Fichotomous reactions to the final report from the four-day November visit by Melrose High School's accrediting body resulted in harsh words at Tuesday night's meeting from one School Committee member, J.D. LaRock, who in turn received stern rebukes from some fellow committee members. We also brought you photos from an accident in which a car struck a tree and landed on its side at Bellevue Avenue and Porter Street shortly before 2 p.m. on Monday afternoon, requiring Melrose firefighters to cut open the roof of the car to extricate the driver. Our top stories of the week ... Eleven Melrose High School students now face suspension from their sports teams after pictures showing the students drinking and smoking tobacco were given to school administrators on Tuesday. The the press release said that students will lose up to 60 percent of their sports season and "face other additional penalties." Melrose Patch also updated you on the debate concerning Ravine Road, a road that has stirred up old animosities between two neighboring communities. The road has long been a source of contention between the two municipalities, with Stoneham officials claiming that the rush-hour commuters who use the road have made it unsafe for residents. Our top stories of the week ... This week we ran a three-part series on Melrose playgrounds and their condition. Part one of this series focused on Joan Bell, Superintendent of Mount Hood and Public Open Space, becoming a Certified Playground Safety Inspector; part two focused on playground injuries and how to prevent them; and part three wrapped it up on Thursday profiling the most prevalent problems on Melrose playgrounds.
