Saugus Police arrested a man on Wednesday who later allegedly implicated himself in the three Eastern Bank robberies committed in Melrose this month.
A man arrested by Saugus Police yesterday on outstanding warrants allegedly implicated himself in the three recent Eastern Bank robberies after a bank teller identified him in a photo, according to Melrose Police Chief Mike Lyle. Joseph Decareau of Saugus was arrested on Wednesday by Saugus Police on warrants, Lyle said. Meanwhile, Melrose Police detectives included a photo of Decareau in a photo array shown to bank employees, which Lyle said led to a teller identifying Decareau as the person who robbed Eastern Bank on Main Street last Friday. A man passed a note to a teller on Friday afternoon—the third bank robbery in Melrose in the past three weeks, and Melrose Police believe the same man may have committed all three.

The Eastern Bank branch at 441 Main St. was robbed on Friday afternoon by a man who passed a teller a note, according to scanner reports. Melrose Police believe the same man may be the person who robbed the Eastern Bank branch at 27 Melrose St. twice in the last two weeks, on July 6 and July 16, they said in a press release issued Friday evening. Melrose Police have released surveillance photos of the person who robbed the Eastern Bank branch at 27 Melrose St. on Saturday. Employees told police that the robber was a tan white man in his 20s wearing a black t-shirt and black baseball cap. Melrose Police Lt. Mark DeCroteau said that robber was also described as wearing light colored shorts and sneakers. The robber approached the teller window, stated that it was a robbery and told the teller to give them the money they had in the drawer, DeCroteau said. The robber made off with a still undetermined amount of cash, according to Melrose Police.
The Eastern Bank branch at 27 Melrose St. was robbed on Wednesday, July 6 by a man who passed a note to a teller, according to Melrose Police. Officers responded to the bank at 4 p.m. last Wednesday after the alarm company called to report a panic/hold-up alarm activiated at the branch. Melrose Police Lt. Mark DeCroteau said that employees reported that a white man, approximately 5-7 to 5-8 feet tall, wearing a baseball cap, navy blue shirt and jeans has passed a note to the teller demanding money. An officer at the station dispatch desk confirmed that the bank had been robbed. Police reported over the radio a description of the robber as a white man in his early 20s, with a mustache, dark hair and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.
