A brisk and overcast June evening didn't deter a boisterous Class of 2012—and equally raucous crowd of family and friends— from celebrating their graduation from Melrose High School on Friday night. As the sun set, temperatures dropped and lips shivered, this year's graduating seniors kept warm by embracing a spirit of camaraderie, whether through loudly cheering on their classmates or through their speeches. Family and friends loudly hooted and hollered throughout the ceremony, with the occassional air horn going off. The graduates themselves broke into cheers throughout the ceremony, especially as their classmates received their diplomas. And when Ashani Logan mentioned during his METCO address that after a journey that took him from …

Well, Class of 2012, teachers, staff, family, friends: Goodbye, ciao, adieu, adios, addio – take your pick. But, before we get to the end of the night, the moment that we all have been thinking about for the past few months, the moment when we can all smile, stand, toss our hats in the air, and finally take that sigh of relief, we have to back track a bit and start at the initial hello. She also decided that in order to prepare for this momentous feat, she should graduate as valedictorian of her high school class. As time passed, she recognized the near impossibility of achieving such ambitions, but she never gave up hope, and she never stopped working. Twelve years later, I stand here before you realizing a lifelong dream. They say that Disneyworld is the place where dreams come true, but they’re wrong. During the past four years, I have …

Ashani Logan gave the METCO address at the Melrose High School graduation ceremonies on Friday night.
The following is the text of Ashani Logan's METCO address at the Melrose High School Class of 2012 graduation ceremonies on Friday night. Look at me now! When I arrived in Boston, I was a freshman in high school who spoke with a low voice and a strong Jamaican accent. My awkward appearance spelled foreigner to anyone that looked at me. My clothing was a clear contrast to the long sleeve shirts, sweaters, and snow boots all around. I felt as though I was a wandering orange who had lost its place and found itself in a basket of unfamiliar apples. I was new to the school’s atmosphere, teenage social norms, bumpy rides on the METCO bus, and having to make new friendships. I admit with no reservations… that I was a very shy kid. Initially, I …
