Sen. Katherine Clark announced Friday to her supporters that she will be running for Congress.
In a letter emailed to her supporters on Friday afternoon, state Sen. Katherine Clark (D-Melrose) announced that she will be running for Congress. U.S. Representative Ed Markey (D-Malden), who represents Melrose in the House, is currently running for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by newly appointed Secretary of State John Kerry. If Markey wins that Senate seat, it would leave open the Fifth Congressional District seat in the House, which Clark would run for. If he loses his bid, he would retain his current House seat. Two other Massachusetts legislators have also announced their intentions to run for Markey's seat, if he wins the Senate seat: state Rep. Carl Sciortino (D-Medford) and state Sen. Congress is so focused on the fiscal cliff, the farm bill has yet to be renewed.
Come Jan. 1, there is a threat that milk prices could rise to $6 to $8 a gallon if Congress does not pass a new farm bill that amends farm policy dating back to the Truman presidency, reported the New York Times. If Congress does not renew the Farm Bill by Monday, Dec. 31, the milk price formula reverts back to 1949, reported CBS Boston. On average, a gallon of milk costs $3.65, according to the dairy industry. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said without a farm bill renewal farmers will be in a hurry to sell to the government, creating a shortage in the stores. After President Obama’s selection of John Kerry as Secretary of State, there’s a lot of interest in the senior senator’s seat.
With U.S. Senator John Kerry as President Barack Obama’s pick for Secretary of State, it’s anyone’s guess who will run for the seat in a special election next summer. Kerry was nominated by Obama on Dec. 21. If Kerry is appointed, Governor Deval Patrick will appoint an interim senator, who will be named to the position before the special election. Two Republican candidates for Massachusetts' 5th Congressional District say 36 years is enough for Democrat Edward Markey, and they want to cut spending by the Federal government and improve the economy. The debt ceiling plan passed by the House of Representatives Monday night was fueled by "ideology-fueled Republican Party and its extreme Tea Party faction," according to Ed Markey, a Democrat who represents Melrose in the House. “We are being forced to choose between the first default in our country’s history or trillions in cuts in investments that create jobs and benefit the lives of countless Americans across the country," Markey said in a statement Tuesday morning.
