Congressman Ed Markey sent a letter to the vice president Wednesday with proposed recommendations for his task force on guns. In the letter (attached), the Malden Democrat asks Joe Biden to consider recommending “a new assault weapons ban that includes all semi-automatic weapons capable of accommodating an ammunition magazine greater than 10 rounds.” He also asks the vice president to consider “a ban on ‘drums’ or ‘magazines’ of ammunition that can carry more than 10 bullets, which were used to deadly effect in both the Newtown and Aurora kilings.” “These are weapons designed for war – not for hunting or protecting one’s home – and have no purpose except to kill as many people as possible without the need to reload,” Markey wrote. With news that Sen. John Kerry may be tapped as the Obama White House's nominee for Secretary of State, Markey said he will "seriously consider" making a run if the vacancy is announced.
Congressman Ed Markey told reporters he was "seriously considering" a run for Senate, should Sen. John Kerry be tapped as President Barack Obama's nominee for secretary of state. Markey, who represents Melrose, made the remarks to reporters at Malden City Hall, following a press conference regarding the city's proposed minor league baseball park. "I hope that John Kerry does become secretary of state; he will be a great secretary of state," Markey said. "When that announcement is made I will seriously consider looking at ... (the seat). Congressman Ed Markey told Framingham Patch a law is needed to ensure compounding pharmacies don't turn into compounding manufacturers.
Congressman Ed Markey (D-Malden), in Framingham Monday to celebrate the opening of a biomedical manufacturing plant, spoke a few minutes to Framingham Patch about the deadly meningitis outbreak, linked to tainted steroids produced at New England Compounding Center in Framingham. The Centers for Disease Control now says almost 300 people have been infected with fungal meningitis in 16 states, including 23 deaths. Markey, who represents Melrose, is the senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He said NECC fell into a "blackhole" between federal and state regulators and became a "compounding manufacturer" and not a compounding pharmacy.
