Stakeholders like the Friends of the Fells and FellsDOG could focus more on encouraging members to follow rules, a park ranger said Wednesday.
There's a "culture of non-compliance" when it comes to rules in Middlesex Fells Reservation, and the people most passionate about the area are in part to blame, according to one official. Breaking of rules in the 2,600-acre reservation stems partly from stakeholder groups, who are more interested in focusing on the behavior of others than educating their members on Fells rules, Curt Rudge, Chief Ranger for the Department of Conservation and Recreation, said in a public hearing Wednesday. The Friends of the Fells, the New England Mountain Biking Association and Fells Dog Owner Group—the three major activist groups when it comes to the Fells—promote their own interests and “are focused on their own goals," when they could be focusing on …

All DCR deepwater pools are currently closed due to an investigation into a woman's body being found in a Fall River pool on Tuesday, but Gov. Deval Patrick said in a radio interview “I think we will be able to get" the pools open for the holiday weekend.
Gov. Deval Patrick said in a radio interview today that he thinks the state will be able to re-open all 30 of the state Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) deepwater pools—including the Lloyd Memorial Pool on Tremont Street in Melrose—in time for the Fourth of July weekend, the Worcester Telegram and Gazette reports. Yesterday, the DCR announced that its 30 deepwater pools would be closed until further notice, after a woman's body was found floating in a Fall River DCR pool on Tuesday night. The Globe reported that authorities said Marie Joseph, 36, was found floating in the Veteran’s Memorial Swimming Pool at Lafayette Park, and that DCR Commissioner Edward M. Lambert Jr. said in a statement that the agency’s deepwater pools …

The DCR commissioner said all of the agency’s deepwater pools will be closed while a review of safety and operations procedures is undertaken over the next 24 to 48 hours, according to The Boston Globe.
The Lloyd Memorial Pool on Tremont Street in Melrose and 29 other swimming pools operated by the state Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) are closed until further notice, after a woman's body was found floating in a Fall River DCR pool last night, the Boston Globe reports. The Globe reported that authorities said Marie Joseph, 36, was found floating in the Veteran’s Memorial Swimming Pool at Lafayette Park, and that DCR Commissioner Edward M. Lambert Jr. said in a statement that the agency’s deepwater pools will be closed while a review of safety and operations procedures is undertaken over the next 24 to 48 hours. The DCR's Lloyd Memorial Pool at 49 Tremont St. in Melrose—sometimes referred to as the "MDC Pool" harkening back…

State officials hope to minimize conflicts between hikers, bikers and dog walkers with a new trail system plan.
State officials have launched a draft trail system plan for the Middlesex Fells Reservation in an effort to reduce tensions between hikers, mountain bikers, dog owners and several other stakeholder groups who use the reservation regularly. Nearly 200 residents attended a public meeting in Medford on Monday to hear a public presentation and share their concerns with officials. Over the past year, officials from the state Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) have been assessing trail conditions and asking for public feedback for how to best manage the reservation's resources. "It's really the diversity of the Fells ... that makes it a special place," said Paul Jahnige, Director of Greenways and Trails for the DCR. There are 122 …

Sounds to me from the comments that the Chief is telling the truth. The special interest groups want the rules changed or they wont comply. It almost sounds like they think they own the fells. It has been my experience as a public employee the Chief may be out of a job soon. It has also been my experience as an owner in a condo association that once certain get control they will always make the …   more ›
