Legislation spurred on by the death of a Hudson dog named Phantom would protect animals in abandoned buildings.
A resident's efforts to find justice for a lab that died after being abandoned in a foreclosed property have culminated with the filing of a bill to protect animals in similar situations. "This is the bill that I want. I have been praying for this bill for two years and I am very, very happy ... I want this law passed. I don’t want this to happen to any other dogs," said Lyn Gorka, a local real estate agent and animal rights advocate, who had spoken out for such a bill after being moved by the story of the 2 year-old Phantom that died after being abandoned in a foreclosed apartment. Lokin, a greyhound from Melrose, was hit by a car on March 28 on Franklin Street in Stoneham. The family needs financial support to cover the dog's medical expenses.

After three months, a missing dog named Bailey was located in Melrose.
[Editor's note: The following is a Letter to the Editor from Laurie McCannon from Northeast Animal Shelter.] On Sept. 17th we emailed or spoke to many of you regarding a lost dog named Bailey. Bailey was in a foster home for just a couple of days when he escaped from the yard in Lynnfield. Many volunteers searched for weeks for Bailey in the Route 1, Saugus/Lynnfield area. Many stores in that area were generously keeping their eyes out for him, ready to contact Northeast Animal Shelter if he was spotted. Many let us hang flyers in their windows to help spread the word. A six-month old puppy went missing near the intersection of Richardson and Main Street. He was spotted several times in Wakefield, most recently at Pump #12 at the Irving Gas Station on Salem St. and Montrose Avenue. The Wakefield Police Department has reviewed the gas station's surveillance tape, but found the view area was obstructed. The Wakefield ACO Ken Stache has now notified the MSPCA, who will issue a Saber Alert. Police suspect the dog was picked up in a car at the gas station, meaning the dog could now be anywhere.
