City Plans to Renovate Lincoln School Playground

The Lincoln Elementary School project was expected to happen in 2014; however, a recent $25,000 donation from the owner of a Dunkin' Donuts in Melrose has helped pushed the project's timetable to 2013.

While it appeared renovation work would not begin until 2014, a recent donation from a Melrose business has the Lincoln Elementary School playground project on track for this year. During a recent press conference, Dolan said he will propose the city contribute an additional $10,000 toward the project. Whiz Kids of the Week: Mia Catalini and Cassandra Tervalon

The fifth graders from Lincoln Elementary School are finalists in Allergy & Asthma Today magazine's Ultimate Inhaler contest.

Melrose Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: Mia Catalini and Cassandra Tervalon How they got there: They came up with the idea of necklaces for boys and girls with asthma that they could wear all the time. The ones for girls would have jewels on them, and the ones for boys would be sports-themed, according to Gail McCarthy, a nurse at the school.  "I'm so proud of them!" she wrote in an email. "They are the captains of our Lincoln School Asthma Group this year, are very enthusiastic, and have lots of great ideas."  What's next: Vote for the girls' idea by contacting the magazine's editor at editor@aanma.org or 800-878-4403 with your name and mailing address. If the two win, they get to go to Washington, D.C. to take part in the AANMA's Allergy & …

Melrose Kid Dances for a Cure

Eight-year-old Sam Egan, a Lincoln School student, is participating in his third Fitness for a Cure event on Saturday to raise money for St. Jude Children's Hospital.

(Melrose resident Sam Egan was also chosen as a Huffington Post Greatest Person of the Day.) Why did 8-year-old Sam Egan join a dance team that raises money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital? "So we can have fun and there’s money for the kids who need help." Kids have a way of spelling out simple truths. Sam will take the stage again this Saturday, March 24 at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium for the 13th annual Fitness for a Cure, a daytime family event and evening gala where Sam and the 99 other kids (and 15 adults) on the St. Jude Performance Team will perform their most recent dance routines. The evening gala is already sold out according to Sam's mother Natalie, but tickets are still available for the family event at 12:30 p.m…

Click here to return to the main Back to School 2011 article. Before the school year even started, the Lincoln School had something to celebrate: Based on last year's MCAS scores, the school met federal progress benchmarks for all students in all subgroups, in both English-Language Arts and math—something that hasn't happened since 2007. The federal No Child Left Behind Act requires schools to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), which uses standardized test scores to measure students' progress towards meeting the federal goal of having all students test as proficient in reading and math by 2014. Principal Brent Conway said that based on the school's preliminary MCAS results, the school made AYP and had positive gains in its Composite …
