What's Open, Closed on MLK Day in Melrose

Federal and state offices are closed but many businesses are open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

On Monday, Jan. 21, Massachusetts observes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday (actually on Jan. 15). While King's Birthday is one of 10 holidays recognized by the federal government, the feds don't require employers to pay workers for this holiday from work. Businesses traditionally provide their employees with a paid holiday as part of a benefits package because most other employers do the same. And according to the Massachusetts Secretary of State's office, business and commercial activities may operate as usual. Video: Melrose Comes Out for a Day of Service

Residents of all ages participated in the Day of Service, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Yesterday, the Melrose Human Rights Commission held its first annual MLK Day of Service.  The event commenced at Veterans Memorial Middle School, where volunteers signed up to work at different sites. Groups then dispersed to various areas of town, working on everything from writing letters to troops to organizing a teen clothing swap. Melrose Patch visited a few of these sites to give you a look at the day's happenings.
