The city of Melrose will be hosting the 18th annual Martin Luther King Day Potluck Dinner and Family Program on Monday, Jan. 21 at 5 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Melrose.

The city of Melrose will be hosting the 18th annual Martin Luther King Day Potluck Dinner and Family Program on Monday, Jan. 21 at 5 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Melrose, according to the city's Human Rights Commission's website. The city will be "celebrating the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 50th Anniversary of his monumental 'I Have a Dream' speech," reads the site. If you plan to attend the free dinner, the event committee asks that you bring a main dish or dessert to serve 4-6 people with ingredients noted on an index card, according to the site. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed on Jan. 20, 1986. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000. 2. Not every state was anxious to acknowledge the Federal holiday. In 1991, the New Hampshire legislature created "Civil Rights Day." In 1999, "Civil Rights Day" was officially changed to "Martin Luther King Day." South Carolina was the last state to recognize the day as a paid holiday for all state employees, when Gov. What's Open, Closed on MLK Day in Melrose

Federal and state offices are closed but many businesses are open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

On Monday, Jan. 21, Massachusetts observes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday (actually on Jan. 15). While King's Birthday is one of 10 holidays recognized by the federal government, the feds don't require employers to pay workers for this holiday from work. Businesses traditionally provide their employees with a paid holiday as part of a benefits package because most other employers do the same.
