The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) will begin work to replace a water meter on Monday, Nov. 26, according to a press statement. "This work may cause discolored water in parts of Melrose and Stoneham in the areas around West Wyoming and the Fellsway (east of Ravine Terrace) for up to three days," reads the statement. "There will be no impacts to water pressure." If discolored water does occur, it will result from a small amount of iron in the pipes, reads the statement. While safe for drinking, cooking and other uses, "iron will stain light colored items in your laundry, especially when bleach is used," according to the statement. This year, students across the MWRA service area were challenged to write essays on the topic of "What a Clean Boston Harbor Means to Me." MWRA received more than 600 writing entries, as well as over 1,100 posters about water conservation. Melrose residents will pay an extra quarter on the water rate next year and an extra 21 cents on the sewer rate.
The Melrose Board of Aldermen passed the water and sewer rate increases for next year as originally proposed on Monday night, after attempts to cut from the budget to lower the rate increases quickly went nowhere. The increases are: Last week, when the proposed rates were first presented to the board by Melrose Public Works Superintendent Bob Beshara and Deputy City Engineer John Scenna, Board President and Aldermen at-Large Don Conn, Jr. said he would "make some motions to cut some things" in order to drive down the rates further. Beshara and Scenna were not present at Monday's meeting. The Melrose residential water rate would increase by a quarter to $5.25 next year under the proposal currently before the Board of Aldermen. The aldermen's Appropriations Committee held a public hearing on Monday night on the proposed water and sewer rates for next year, along with the Water Enterprise Fund and the Sewer Enterprise Fund—the last unfinished business when it comes to the city's fiscal 2012 budget.
