Local Aid in Initial Senate Budget Matches House

Melrose would see an approximate $640K increase in local aid next year under both the Senate Ways and Means budget proposal and the final House budget approved earlier this month.

Melrose would receive a net $646,613 boost in local aid from the state over last year in the Senate Ways & Means budget proposal that the Senate is scheduled to take up this week. That increase roughly matches the local aid boost approved in the state House of Representatives final budget, which allocates an additional $642,138 for the city in local aid. Both the House budget and the Senate Ways and Means budget include more than $300,000 in local aid funding for Melrose than what was included in Gov. Deval Patrick's budget proposal for fiscal 2013. The additional funding is included in the unrestricted government aid line item; the city's Chapter 70 education funding would remain the same as the governor's budget. Rep. Paul Brodeur, D-…

Clark and Brodeur Unopposed In Fall Election

Melrose's state legislators, Sen. Katherine Clark and Rep. Paul Brodeur, don't have any challengers in their 2012 re-election campaigns.

Editor's note: This article was corrected at 11:35 a.m. on Thursday by adding the Winchester Wards now included in the 5th Middlesex Senate district. While the presidential campaign between incumbent Democrat Barack Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney will heat up this year, the 2012 election will be a little sleepier on the Melrose front. Neither Sen. Katherine Clark, D-Melrose, nor Rep. Paul Brodeur, D-Melrose, the city's representatives in the state Senate and House respectively, will face a challenger in this fall's election on Nov. 6, 2012. Would-be candidates for district and county offices, which includes the state Legislature, had until the end of the day on May 1 to submit nomination papers to local election …

As Expected, Melrose Getting Additional $300K In Local Aid

The state budget passed this summer included a clause that would send any unspent state funds at the end of fiscal 2011 back to cities and towns.

Melrose will receive an additional $300,000 in local aid this fiscal year, the city's state delegation has announced, a move expected due to a clause included in the fiscal 2012 Massachusetts budget passed earlier this summer that sends unspent state funds back to cities and towns. Rep. Paul Brodeur, D-Melrose, said that the Legislature "did kind of anticipate this" when passing the fiscal 2012 budget, which included $65 million in local aid cuts, but also the proposal to send unspent funds back to municipalities. "The comptroller essentially has to certify that’s what’s left over, then we will push out the money," Brodeur said. The Legislature approved the move in a supplemental spending bill that passed last week and closed the books on …

Poll Results: Melrose Split on Casino Question

The state Senate is scheduled to take up a bill next week after the House passed a bill last week that would allow three resort-style casinos in Massachusetts.

With the casino debate scheduled in the Massachusetts Senate on Monday, Sept. 26, we asked in a poll last week: Do you support the casino bill? The latest reincarnation of the casino bill easily passed in the Massachusetts House of Representatives last Wednesday by a 123-32 vote. Rep. Paul Brodeur, D-Melrose, also voted in favor of the bill. The bill would permit three casinos in three regions of the state, and a single slot parlor with 1,250 machines. Between last Thursday and Monday night, 36 people voted on our poll. The results? Melrose is divided on casinos, but leans slightly against expanded gambling. Here's the breakdown: Through the bill, all state revenue from the slot parlor would be transferred to a local aid fund, while a …

Melrose's State Legislators Weigh In On Revived Casino Bill

Sen. Katherine Clark and Rep. Paul Brodeur both expressed tentative support for the new bill that would bring three casinos and one slot parlor to the state.

Two of Melrose's state legislators tentatively support a revived casino bill that Massachusetts lawmakers are expected to debate as they return from summer break this week, but are still reviewing how any gambling revenues would be distributed. A joint committee of the Legislature has crafted a bill that would permit three casinos in three regions of the state, and a single slot parlor with 1,250 machines. Sen. Katherine Clark, D-Melrose, who represents Melrose Wards 1-5, told Melrose Patch that she's leaning in favor of the bill. "I think we have never needed jobs and revenue for the state more than we do now," Clark said. "I am, however, still reviewing the 155-page bill with a real focus on how the different revenue streams are being …

The Legislature and Governor designed the current bill behind closed door.... It is a done deal. Special interests and lobbyists win once again. And politicians wonder why the public doesn't respect or trust elected officials? The current economy is so fragile that even those who have never had a gambling problem might develop gambling addictions because their own finances are desperate. I have …   more ›
