Five Things You Need to Know Today

Melrose High School Softball Team's Carwash is Saturday

Find out what is happening May 11-12 in Melrose.

Here are 5 Things to know for the weekend of May 11-12 in Melrose: 1. Car wash: The Melrose High School softball team will be having a carwash at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the high school. 2. Sales galore: There will be a yard sale at 9 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church, UCC. 3. Clean-up time! A spring clean-up day will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday at Melrose Dog Park at Ell Pond. The park is located in the area of 330-360 Lynn Fells Parkway. 4. Film viewing: "The 11th Hour" will be shown at 7 p.m. Saturday at Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church. 5. Open houses: Check out a sampling of open houses slated for Sunday in Melrose. Melrose Tripped Up by Belmont, Falling 12-1

Red Raiders fall below .500 at 5-6.

It was a rough Friday for the Melrose High School baseball team, as Belmont tallied three runs in the first and eight in the second leading to a 12-1 loss on Friday at Brandon Grant Field in Belmont. Melrose falls just below the tournament line at 5-6 while Belmont goes over the .500 mark at 6-5. The afternoon started on a perfect note for the Marauders as the first three batters singled and scored on Marauders' clean-up hitter and pitcher Mike Richardson's double clearing the bases.  Red Raider Jon Botelho's double in the fifth scored Melrose's only run of the evening.

Farrell Tabbed New Melrose High School Principal

Superintendent Cyndy Taymore appoints Marianne Farrell the new Melrose High School principal.

Superintendent Cyndy Taymore announced Thursday that Marianne Farrell will be the new principal at Melrose High School. "I believe Marianne has both the depth and the vision that Melrose High School needs," Taymore said in a press statement. "I appointed her interim principal during the summer in order to have continuity and consistency at the high school. Since then, Marianne has shown true leadership in many ways. She has created positive relationships with staff, parents, and students. I feel that the building has a better culture as a result of her leadership. Construction Begins on Melrose High School Science Labs

With the asbestos abatement work completed, construction of the Melrose High School science labs began this week, according to City Planner Denise Gaffey.

With the asbestos abatement work completed, construction of the Melrose High School science labs began this week, according to City Planner Denise Gaffey. The science labs construction project began Monday at the high school, according to Gaffey. However, before the construction could get underway, Norwood-based contractor Southern Middlesex Industries needed to finish the abatement. "During (February) vacation all the asbestos abatement work was occurring and that was completed during school vacation as scheduled," Gaffey said, adding that school resumed operations Feb. 25. The 18,000-square-foot renovation project is expected to be completed by August 2013 for the start of the 2013-2014 school year, according to officials. A high school …
