As do I, Betsey. The original total ban was total overkill. I also agree with you that anyone not playing golf ought to stay off the golf course, and I also have no clue why it's so difficult a concept for some to wrap their heads around. I also support improving the trails and paths that do not fall within the course to provide a better experience for those walkers who choose to use them.   more ›

Melrose Park Commission Rescinds Dog Ban at Mt. Hood

On Monday the Park Commission voted 3-2 to rescind the total dog ban at Mount Hood.

The Melrose Park Commission narrowly voted to rescind a total dog ban at Mount Hood, according to multiple sources. On Monday the Commission voted 3-2 to overturn the dog ban, as dogs will be allowed in the park but not on the fairways or greens, according to Mayor Rob Dolan's blog.  "The ban has been replaced by a compromise, and now dog owners as well as Golf Management, Inc., and city staff must all do their part to ensure that all parties—dog walkers, golfers, and those who are simply out for a stroll—can enjoy Mount Hood," wrote Dolan. "This means that dogs must be on a leash at all times, and dogs are not allowed at all on the fairways, greens, or roughs of the golf course. "Golf Management has the primary responsibility for …

A reader shares a video of dogs enjoying the new off-leash dog park at the East Knoll.

Melrose Patch reader Joe Harrington shared a video with us of dogs enjoying the new off-leash dog park at the East Knoll. The new park officially opened after the aldermen approved (after some last second objections) the rules and regulations that govern the park on June 4. On Tuesday, June 26, the city in conjunction with the Melrose Dog Society are presenting a Dog Play video and presentation from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Memorial Hall. The presentation will teach dog owners about good dog play, how to help their pets get along with other dogs at the new park and when to intervene to prevent problems before they happen.

Off-Leash Dog Park Rules Approved, After Objections To Location

Some residents decried the park's proximity to The Knoll World War I memorial, but others said the creation of the dog park would help spruce up a neglected area.

Rules and regulations that govern the new off-leash dog park at The East Knoll received unanimous final approval from the Melrose Board of Aldermen Monday night, but not before some residents decried its proximity to The Knoll World War I memorial. The Park Commission approved the creation of the new dog park at its meeting on April 9 and construction has already begun. However, allowing dogs off leash in the park requires the aldermen to amend the city's leash ordinance. Three years ago, the aldermen told the group that if they found a location, they'd change the ordinance. Those rules and ordinance change went before the aldermen's Appropriations Committee on Thursday, May 24, and were recommended for final passage after a slight change…

Melrose now has the distinction of having the largest park and open, green space in Melrose off limits to dogs for 8 months of the year! This vote was made against a packed hall of dog advocates who pleaded with the Commissioners to reconsider their motion and to work with …   more ›

Off-Leash Dog Park Rules Moving Forward

The aldermen's Appropriations Committee gave an initial OK to rules for the new dog park at The Knoll.

Editor's note: This article was updated on Tuesday at 9:35 a.m. Rules and regulations that would govern the new off-leash dog park at The Knoll received an initial OK from the Melrose Board of Aldermen last Thursday night. The rules recommended for passage by the aldermen's Appropriations Committee on Thursday were drafted by Ward 2 Alderman Monica Medeiros, who shared them with the Park Commission which voted …
