The city of Melrose awarded Innovation Grants during a ceremony at Memorial Hall Wednesday night. Let us know what you think.
Do Melrose children need access to another charter school in the area? It's a pertinent question now that the Pioneer Charter School of Science (PCSS) has reached the final round of the application process to open two new charter public schools—one of which would serve Melrose and five other communities, according to a statement. The new schools, if approved by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in February, would serve 360 students in grades 7-12 in communities north of Boston, according to the statement. The Mystic Valley Regional Charter School already educates Melrose students, but perhaps families are searching for something different. What do you think? Tell us in the comments section.

School district generally outperformed state average.
Melrose students generally outperformed the state average in multiple MCAS categories, according to MCAS data recently released by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Tenth grade students went from 48 to 50 percent in advanced mathematics, and from 39 to 42 percent in advanced English language arts. Science also showed slight improvement for the 10th graders, with 18 percent scoring in the "advanced" category compared to 16 percent last year. However, the number in the “failing” category slightly increased in the past year in all three categories, going from 3 to 7 (mathematics), 1 to 2 (English language arts) and 3 to 5 in science. Eighth grade students improved in the "proficient" category for English …

School starts Tuesday. How is your family preparing?
Tuesday marks the first day of the 2012-2013 school year in Melrose, and it's likely that parents and children are full of a mix of excitement and anxiety. Over the summer there were books to read, clothes to buy and last week new teachers and classmates to meet at back-to-school events. How has your family handled the demands, and what concerns do you or your child still have about the approaching school year?

Once again, I understand the sentiment, but he thought of diluting the public school budget even further with assessments from another charter school is worrying. We already have the Voke and the MV assessments consuming our limited resources. Another charter school can only further damage an already floundering public system, which has yet to bottom out, despite the "everything is good" nonsense…   more ›
