VIDEO: Polymnia Prepares for Fauré's 'Requiem' Concert on Saturday

Polymnia Choral Society with UMass Lowell Chamber Singers and an orchestra of top Greater Boston musicians will perform on Saturday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary's.

Editor's note: This article was corrected on Friday, March 23 at 4:05 p.m. This Saturday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m., Polymnia Choral Society is holding a concert at St. Mary's featuring Gabriel Fauré's "Requiem" and other works from the  Romantic Revolution age. The group will be joined by members of the UMass Lowell Chamber Singers, one guest from the Melrose Symphony Orchestra, and 14 other orchestra musicians from around the Greater Boston area. Watch the video above for a preview of the music from Tuesday night's rehearsal and details from Polymnia Director Murray Kidd about the pieces that will be performed. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for seniors and students, $5 for children 12 and under, and can be purchased online.

Melrose Native Joins 24-Hour BSO to Tanglewood Relay

MHS graduate Erin Svoboda enters the Tanglewood Relay Run this weekend.

Erin Svoboda is a professional musician and a novice runner, but that won't stop her from tying on her sneakers for the Tanglewood Relay Run on Friday and Saturday. Teams of runners will set off from the Boston Symphony Orchestra Friday morning for a 24-hour relay that ends at the BSO's summer home in the Berkshires, to raise funds for music education programs offered at Tanglewood. Svoboda, who graduated from Melrose High School in 2001 and studied at the New England Conservatory, was also a student for three summers at Tanglewood. She's working at Tanglewood this summer, although not in the orchestra. Her father, Richard Svoboda, is a bassoonist in the BSO. The MSO's Winter Concert is this weekend at Memorial Hall on March 5.

The Melrose Symphony Orchestra is back for its penultimate concert of the year. Richard Svoboda (bassoon) has been the principal bassoonist in the Boston Symphony Orchestra and is now on the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music. His daughter, Erin Svoboda (clarinet), is a freelance musician who lives in New York. Both soloists have their roots with the Melrose Symphony Orchestra and spoke to Melrose Patch about how they got involved and why they are excited for the concert. Note-able Soloists Help Symphony Usher in 93rd Season

The Melrose Symphony Orchestra starts its 2010-2011 season on Nov. 6 with guest soloists from the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

When the Melrose Symphony Orchestra (MSO) kicks off their 93rd season at Memorial Hall on Saturday, they will be joined by two prominent members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO)—cellist Owen Young and violinist Lucia Lin. The soloists will join the MSO and conductor Yoichi Udagawa for Brahm's Concerto for Violin and Cello. The pair worked with Udagawa before. "I have done this piece with [these soloists] in other places," Udagawa explained. "I was very eager to bring it to Melrose so that the audiences here could listen to them. These guys are amazing."
