Union Vice President Lt. Jay Morneault presented a check to the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School group earlier this month to help sponsor a Vietnam veterans experience in our nation’s capital. The Local 1617 joins a number of local residents and groups who have supported this year’s trip through private donations and the purchasing of fundraising calendars and bracelets. Mayor Rob Dolan and the Melrose Recreation Department are collaborating on a project to collect sporting equipment and apparel for the nation of Haiti.

Mayor Rob Dolan and the Melrose Recreation Department are collaborating on a project to collect sporting equipment and apparel for the nation of Haiti, according to a city press statement. Melrosian Rebecca Zama is heading up the project, according to the statement. "This is a wonderful opportunity to help the children of Haiti," said Dolan in the statement, "and I want to commend Rebecca for taking the initiative to do this. It is a big undertaking, but I know her efforts will make a difference in many children’s lives." In January 2010, an earthquake killed more than 300,000 people and displaced nearly a million in Haiti. Middle School Girls Send WWII Vets to Washington

Five MVMMS students raised over $9,000 so they could take Melrose's World War II veterans to visit their memorial in Washington as part of the Operation Resolve project.

Editor's note: This article was updated on Thursday at 10:15 a.m. to correct the name of the Comcast representative who donated to the trip in March. On May 30, 2011, Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School held its annual Memorial Day assembly, at which Principal Tom Brow unveiled Operation Resolve—Melrose: a drive based on a national program to bring World War II veterans to visit their memorial in Washington, D.C. Five MVMMS students answered the call: Natalie Brogan, Miranda Lombardo, Isabelle Miller, Hannah Wells and Emma Wiklund, now all eighth graders, who formed a team to fundraise for the trip.
