Middle Schoolers Summonsed on Assault and Battery Charges

Two 14-year-old students have been charged in an alleged fight that took place on Friday.

Two Melrose middle school students have been charged with assault and battery after a fight that allegedly took place on Melrose High School grounds on Friday. According to the Melrose Police logs, on Friday at 5:03 p.m., a mother called from Children's Hospital in Boston reporting that her son was attacked by three other youths. Two 14-year-olds were issued summonses on the charge of assault and battery. Melrose Police Lt. Mark DeCroteau said that the 14-year-olds are both Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School students. He declined to provide further information on the alleged fight, whether someone had been taken to the hospital as a result of the fight, or the medical status of the alleged victim, citing the ages of the people …

Whiz Kids: The MVMMS Cheerleading Squad

The seventh and eighth grade girls will compete in Florida this weekend against teams from across the country.

Melrose Patch Whiz Kids of the Week: The Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School cheerleading squad.  From coach Sharon DelGenio:  This is a great honor, not only for the girls and their school but for the City of Melrose.  This is only the second year for the cheerleading program. It is run by the Melrose Recreation Department and is for the seventh and eighth grade students of the school. It is also the second year for football. Both programs started together in the fall of 2010.    The girls started practicing in August, three nights per week. They entered the New England Cheer & Dance Competition at the Reggie Lewis Arena in Boston in November. They placed in their division and were invited to compete in the National Cheer & Dance …

Whiz Kid: Irish Step Dancer Mia Francazio

The eighth grader will compete in Dublin this month with other members of the O'Shea Chaplin Academy of Irish Dance.

Whiz Kids

Whiz Kids: The MVMMS Robot Building and Wielding Team

The team won awards at a state championship for their programming and driving skills.

Melrose Patch Whiz Kids of the Week Submitted by James Horne of Melrose First Robotics:  Meghan and Chloe are joined by Austin Swank, a freshman at Lexington Voc Tech and supported by John Wright, Mike Festa, and Mike Groark as mentors. James Horne was the spark plug for the team. We also had help from last year's mentor Kevin Hegarty. The students met several times during the holiday break at the ReMax/Heritage office in downtown Melrose, and the Melrose Public library so that we could have a warm place to work while the school was shut down. They have done an awesome job. We drove the robot around and tested it last night, we think we should be able to score points in both autonomous (no human control), and teleoperated mode (human …
