Gusty northwest winds are expected Friday afternoon.
The National Weather Service is warning of elevated fire weather conditions developing Friday afternoon and continuing into Saturday for Massachusetts. Gusty northwest winds are expected Friday afternoon. The winds plus dry conditions will create a fire hazard, according to the NWS. Elevated fire conditions will continue through mid-day Saturday, but winds should diminish in the afternoon. There is a “low probability” that southwest winds on Sunday will cause a wind advisory.

Rain combined with melting snow from the storm at the end of last week could cause minor flooding in streams Tuesday afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service said.
After the winter we've had so far, the warmer weather to start the week has been a welcome respite, but could cause flooding problems when rain passes through the area on Tuesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch for Melrose and much of Eastern and Central Massachusetts, in effect from Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday morning. Up to an inch of rainfall is expected on Tuesday, which combined with melting snow from the storm at the end of last week could cause some small streams to experience minor flooding, the NWS said. Melrose unofficially received 26.5 inches of snow as a result of the blizzard that smacked the region Friday and Saturday, according to figures released by the National Weather Service. The numbers published by the NWS came from observers, spotters and media collected during the storm. The Melrose number was recorded at 5:53 a.m. Saturday. Figures from nearby communities include 30.2 inches for Winchester, 28 inches for Somerville, 26 inches for Cambridge, 24 inches for Medford, 22 inches for Stoneham and 20 inches for Malden. The Melrose area was expecting 18 to 24 inches of snow by the end of the storm, according to the National Weather Service.
One of the strongest winter storms seen in Melrose in years was expected to continue through Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service. A blizzard warning issued by the weather service at 10:47 p.m. Friday was set to remain in effect until 1 p.m. Saturday. The blizzard warning said the Melrose area should expect the "strongest winds and heaviest snow through Saturday morning." Projected snowfall totals for the storm remained steady at 18 to 24 inches, and the National Weather Service was expecting winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts up to 80 miles per hour. As of 3:19 p.m. on Wednesday, the National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Watch for Middlesex County and much of Massachusetts from Friday morning through Saturday afternoon. According to NWS, much the state will be impacted by heavy snow with accumulation of 12 to 24 inches with the potential for blizzard conditions. The NWS previously forecast 14 to 18 inches in the Melrose area. That total has been increased to 18 to 24 inches in the latest forecast. (See photo.)
