Outgoing lieutenant governor said recent controversies had nothing to do with decision to resign.
Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Tim Murray said none of the controversies that have dogged him during his tenure on Beacon Hill contributed to his decision to announce his resignation. In a press conference at the State House Wednesday, Murray said his final day on the job will be June 2. The next day he will take over as president and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce where his salary will reportedly be around $200,000. In January, Murray said he had no intention of running for governor when Gov. Deval Patrick's term expires in January 2015. "This has been a very difficult but empowering decision," Murray said. Melrose-based Beacon Hill Wine & Gourmet will be raising money for Marc Fucarile, a Boston Marathon bombing victim from Stoneham, according to store owner Rebecca Beraldi. Charitable Cause Beraldi, of Andover, will be having a fundraiser to benefit Fucarile on June 1 at her store, which has been in Melrose for 3 1/2 years. Fifteen percent of the store's total sales for that day, as well as all donations received from raffles, will go directly to Fucarile, she said. "The fun part of it all will be starting at noon (on June 1)," she said. "We're going to have a beer vendor, a wine vendor and I have two food vendors but I'm hoping to get three more. Dozens of police vehicles escorted the body of slain MIT police officer Sean Collier to a private funeral service at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Peabody Wednesday afternoon.
More than 30 American flags, veterans from across Massachusetts and Connecticut, Peabody police officers and state troopers solemnly greeted the motorcade bearing the body of Sean Collier as it arrived in Peabody Wednesday afternoon. Collier, a 26-year-old MIT police officer who was allegedly shot and killed by the two Boston Marathon bombing suspects on April 18, was laid to rest at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The motorcade, which included three departments Collier was affiliated with -- MIT, Cambridge and Somerville, accompanied Collier's family from the site of a memorial service at MIT earlier today. Congressman attended Wednesday night's vigil for those impacted by the Boston Marathon bombings.
U.S. Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) talked of more than one "healing process" for Medford after attending Wednesday evening's prayer vigil at Grace Episcopal Church meant to honor those impacted by Monday's bombings at the Boston Marathon. Medford is grieving after the loss of native Krystal Campbell, who was killed in the bombings. "Every religion, every race came here today in order to actually help the healing process for the (Campbell) family and help the healing process for the city that is feeling a great deal of pain right now," Markey said. Patty Campbell called her daughter Krystle a wonderful person, hard worker.
Patty Campbell, the mother of Krystle Campbell, delivered a brief, emotional statement Tuesday evening on her daughter, who was killed in Monday's bombing at the Boston Marathon. "We are heartbroken at the death of our daughter, Krystle Marie," Patty Campbell said from the porch of the family's home at 25 Park St. in Medford. "She was a wonderful person, everybody who knew her loved her." Patty Campbell spoke to dozens of media members and was joined on her porch with her son, Billy, and brother, John Reilly. Governor Deval Patrick paid educators and children at the Franklin Early Education Center a visit Friday afternoon in Melrose. Patrick, who was greeted in the lobby by parents, children as well as local and state officials, took a tour of the center before sitting down to read Dr. Seuss's "Sneetches on Beaches" to a small group of students. The children appeared to be enjoying themselves during the governor's visit, laughing at different points during the reading, engaging with him by answering his questions and also having him answer a couple of theirs.
