Station Fire Property Owner Donates Land for Memorial

Property transfer papers were filed at West Warwick Town Hall on Friday.

According to the Associated Press, West Warwick property owner Ray Villanova has agreed to donate the site of The Station nightclub for use as a permanent memorial to the 100 people killed—including a Melrose resident—in the Feb. 2003 blaze. Jeffrey W. Martin, a Melrosian, was one of the victims in the fire, according to an obituary posted on the Boston Globe website. Villanova's lawyer, Dan McKiernan filed papers at West Warwick Town Hall on Friday morning transferring the land to the Station Fire Memorial Foundation. The decision brings closure to a long-standing effort to secure the site of the tragedy by families of those killed. The one condition of the transfer is that a suitable memorial be maintained at the site in perpetuity. …

Leave it to Rhode Island to try and seize a property that was the site of such a great tragedy, using eminent domain as the excuse. Rhode Island is such a disgusting state, I can't believe I spent almost 10 years of my life living under that ridiculous government.   more ›
