POLL: Support for One-Way Ravine Road Trial?

What do you think about the experiment of making Ravine Road one-way from Fellsway East to Woodland Road?

The state Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is moving forward with plans to make the upper section of Ravine Road from Fellsway East to Woodland Road a one-way state-controlled street for a six-month trial period. The issue of drivers using Ravine Road as a cut-through has been a source of contention between Melrose and Stoneham officials for years. The lower half of which, between Fellsway East and West Wyoming Avenue, is half in Melrose and half in Stoneham. In 2008, Stoneham put up two 'Do Not Enter' signs on the road and placed barricades in the roadway that prevented traffic from turning onto the road from Fellsway East. Melrose filed a legal injunction against Stoneham, which took the  barriers and signs down with the …

It may or may not decrease your commute time, but it certainly will be a more PEACEFUL and LESS DANGEROUS route into Melrose. Stay on the Fells way (Woodland Rd.) and go straight through the rotary at the Flynn Ice skating rink (heading towards Malden), TAKE THE FIRST LEFT this is East Boarder Rd. At the quick set of lights you will take another sharp left this puts you on Fellsway E. This will …   more ›

Trial One-Way Ravine Road Starts Saturday

Starting Saturday, May 5, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will make the upper section of Ravine Road from Woodland Road to Fellsway East a one-way state-controlled street for a six-month trial period.

Starting Saturday, May 5, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will make the upper section of Ravine Road from Woodland Road to Fellsway East a one-way state-controlled street for a six-month trial period. The plan was originally announced in November last year. At a recent Stoneham Board of Selectmen session, Town Administrator David Ragucci said he met with DCR about Ravine Road and the change will run for the next six months and "we'll assess after that." "The six-month trial does not include any roadway changes to lower Ravine Road (Fellsway East to W. Wyoming Ave.)," reads the press statement. "During this trial period, traffic from Woodland Road will be forced to used Pond Street to reach the Fellsway. "…

As one that lives along the Fellsway right across from Ravine road, I second the opinion above about enforcement of traffic rules already in place as a solution to the problem. In the past three years, I have seen police enforcing the 25 mph speed limit along this stretch exactly once. Most drivers speed by at what must be at least 45-50mph. This is bound to cause accidents as the speeders meet …   more ›

Stretch of Ravine Road to Become One-Way for Trial Period

Stoneham Town Administrator David Ragucci informed residents of the change at a meeting on Tuesday night.

Ravine Road will become a one-way from its intersection with the Fellsway East to Woodland Road for at least a trial period of about six months and maybe permanently, according to Stoneham Town Administrator David Ragucci. Ragucci told Stoneham and neighboring Melrose residents that the trial period will go into effect in the next two to three weeks and last until spring, when the issue will be revisited. “If it doesn’t work, we’ll come back to the drawing board,” he said at Tuesday night’s informational meeting at Stoneham Town Hall. The change is meant to increase safety at the notoriously-dangerous intersection of Ravine Road and the Fellsway East, especially during rush hour, by preventing vehicles from exiting Ravine Road onto the …

As part of the resolution of the Stone Place development the owners were required to pay Stoneham $25000 to study the Wyoming Ave to Washington St corridor on the Fellsway. This, of course, includes Ravine Road. Melrose was to have equal voice with Stoneham in the consultant selection. To the best of my knowledge, no such study has been done. This was a written agreement, and it is a public …   more ›
