Melrose Coach England Basketball Hall of Fame

Ellis Lane, who started coaching at Wakefield High School in 1970, went on to a storied career in the region.

A coaching legend who spent time at Melrose High School will reportedly be inducted next month into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.  According to the SeaCoastOnline.com website in Southern New Hampshire, Ellis Lane’s upcoming induction will be his seventh into a hall of fame, with others including Wakefield and Stoneham High Schools, plus the Massachusetts State Coaches Hall of Fame and the Intercity Baseball League Hall of Fame. More recently in his career, he was also apparently a coach in York, Maine. The report also noted that former Senator Scott Brown is a former player of Lane’s at Wakefield and that he will be inducted to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in June as well. Melrose Tripped Up by Belmont, Falling 12-1

Red Raiders fall below .500 at 5-6.

It was a rough Friday for the Melrose High School baseball team, as Belmont tallied three runs in the first and eight in the second leading to a 12-1 loss on Friday at Brandon Grant Field in Belmont. Melrose falls just below the tournament line at 5-6 while Belmont goes over the .500 mark at 6-5. The afternoon started on a perfect note for the Marauders as the first three batters singled and scored on Marauders' clean-up hitter and pitcher Mike Richardson's double clearing the bases.  Red Raider Jon Botelho's double in the fifth scored Melrose's only run of the evening.

Before the tragic events that unfolded Monday afternoon at the 2013 Boston Marathon, some Melrosians were able to finish the race. A pair of explosives detonated shortly before 3 p.m. Monday, killing three people and injuring up to 125 near the finish line at the Boston Marathon. UPDATE: 14 Melrose Runners at Boston Marathon are Safe

We'll post any additional updates we receive about the dozens of Melrose residents that were participating in the 2013 Boston Marathon on Monday prior to the tragic explosions that brought the annual event to a halt.

Updated at 12 p.m. Wednesday In an email to Melrose Patch, reader Chris Vander Rhodes wrote, "Josh Iverson and family are safe. Josh's group was stopped at 25.3 miles" of the Boston Marathon route. Fourteen of 40 Melrose runners have been reported safe. We'll continue to provide updates as we receive them. Updated at 5:55 a.m. Wednesday In an email to Melrose Patch late Tuesday night, Melrose runner Kevin Reddall wrote, "I finished the marathon safely. Thanks for your concern." With several snowstorms hitting the city this winter, Melrose golf courses are opening about a month later than last year.  Mount Hood Golf Course Opened Wednesday With temperatures rising and conditions at the course looking good, Mount Hood Golf Course opened on Wednesday, according to Joan Bell, superintendent of Mount Hood and Public Open Space. "With the snow and the water we had to deal with afterwards with the soft greens and soft grass, we had to wait until we could handle having carts and equipment out there," Bell said. "But now that the ground has firmed up, we have the crews out there cleaning and tee markers are in and we're going."
