Where Are The Best Places to Celebrate New Year's Eve?

For this week's Patch Picks column, we want to know your favorite places nearby to ring in the new year.

New Year's Eve is a time to dress up and head out either to your favorite restaurant or bar, or one that you only frequent on special occasions.  So tell us, from your experience, where are the best places to celebrate?  Be sure to include why you chose them. Is it the food? The convivial atmosphere and the confetti that falls from the ceiling at midnight? The sheer number of single, attractive people who show up? Let us know and we'll compile your feedback into this Thursday's Patch Picks column.

Poll Results: Melrosians Prefer to Shop at Foodmaster

Though many people like doing their grocery shopping at Market Basket and other stores.

Last week, Melrose Patch asked users which local grocery store they prefer to shop at. Between Thursday and Tuesday, 64 people took the poll.  The results?  In the comments section, several people wrote that their alternative choice for grocery shopping was Market Basket, whether it be for its produce or low prices.  Others, like Katie Sorello, must weigh price against quality. "Shaw's is ridiculously expensive but has a better selection than Foodmaster, which is why I use Shaw's as a convenience store," she said. Meanwhile, Betsey Benagh usually shops at Whole Foods. "I spend about the same as I would at Shaw's, but the quality is so much better, and the shopping experience is much more pleasant."  What do you think of the results? Keep …

Market Basket is wonderful especially the Chelsea store. Johnnies has great meat and dairy items. Shaws has a hands down 100% better produce section than Johnnies. Johnnies tends to have "older" fruits and veggies. I wish they could expand that section. It is a bit small. However, the fancier the store sometimes the higher the prices.   more ›

Non-Profits That Need Donations This Holiday Season

For this week's Patch Picks, we asked you to share with your neighbors where they should bring canned food, coats or other goods.

Food banks across the country are struggling every day to gather enough food to feed the poor, according to NPR, and even more so during the holidays.  So for this week's Patch Picks, we asked which ones, along with soup kitchens and other non-profit organizations, need donations from the community. Here's what you told us: This Malden-based non-profit, which assists families in Melrose and Greater Boston, is holding a gift drive seeking toys and gift cards for homeless and at-risk families, according to Patty Kelly, community outreach coordinator for Housing Families. To learn more about Housing Families and how you may help with the drive, contact Kelly at 781-322-9119. Visit Housing Families website at www.housingfamilies.org. Christina…
