With a primary on April 30 and a final election on June 25, Melrose gets ready for a special election to fill the Senate seat vacated by John Kerry.
With a special election slated for this spring to fill the Senate seat formerly occupied by Secretary of State John Kerry, local election departments across the state are scrambling to organize. Some have asked how much the special election will cost Melrose. I asked Melrose City Clerk Mary Rita O'Shea about the situation in Melrose. O'Shea said special elections cost the city about $31,500. So, with a primary scheduled for April 30 and the state election scheduled for June 25, this year's special election will cost Melrose about $63,000. That money pays for things like staffing the polls, police details, supplies and printing the ballots, according to O'Shea. O'Shea said her department is busy handling several tasks at the moment, …

John Kerry, who was just approved as the next Secretary of State, stopped by the Middlesex County District Attorney's office in Woburn Thursday for a visit.
The Middlesex District Attorney's office had a special guest on Thursday. Middlesex DA Gerry Leone welcomed John Kerry, who on Tuesday was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the next Secretary of State. Kerry was a senator for Massachusetts from 1985 until his resignation to take up his new position earlier this week. The stop was part of a tour Kerry is taking around the state as he prepares to take on his new responsibilities. His choice to stop by the Middlesex District Attorney's office was also a chance to catch up on an old place of employment. Scott Brown ended speculation Friday afternoon as to whether he would run for U.S. Senate, announcing that he is not entering the race for the seat left vacant by John Kerry’s confirmation to the post of Secretary of State. Two Democratic political opponents – Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) and Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) – will face off in the April 30 primary with the special election set for June 25. On Wednesday, Governor Deval Patrick announced his former chief of staff William “Mo” Cowan will be the interim senator and will serve until a new senator is elected in the June 25 special election. Kerry will replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.
With only three dissenting votes, the U.S. Senate has confirmed John Kerry as the new Secretary of State. Kerry will take over for Hillary Clinton, who is leaving her post after four years. The move means Kerry will have to resign as a senator soon paving the way for a special senate election. The primary election is scheduled for April 30 and the general election will be held on June 25. U.S. Congressman Ed Markey, D-MA, has announced he is running for the seat. U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch, D-MA has hinted that he may run. As for an interim senator for Kerry's seat, Gov. Boston.com is reporting an early salvo has been fired in what could be the Senate special election showdown.
In a radio interview Wednesday morning, U.S. Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) jabbed at Democratic Congressman Edward Markey about his residency in Malden, according to a Boston.com report. Brown questioned if Markey, who represents Melrose, still lives in Massachusetts and also told WTKK-FM he often sees members of the Bay State congressional delegation on plane trips home but said "I have never seen Ed on the airplane—ever," according to the report. Markey spokeswoman Giselle Barry responded in an email to Patch Wednesday, saying, "Scott Brown has not yet announced that he is running for Senate, but he is already launching false, personal attacks from the sidelines.
