Mayor Dolan Shows Support For MHS iRaiders Program

In a letter, Mayor of Melrose Rob Dolan discusses the effect the Melrose High School iRaiders program has had on the community.

[Editor's note: The following is a letter from Mayor of Melrose Rob Dolan's blog about the Melrose High School iRaiders program.] To Whom It May Concern: I write many letters in my job as mayor to support different organizations. I am enthused to help any organization succeed, but I am particularly enthused about writing this letter today to you. The iRaiders, from their conception to today, have fundamentally changed education in our community, particularly in the area of STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Allow me to give you five examples of why this is so. For these reasons, and many more, I believe the Melrose iRaiders are worthy of the Chairman’s Award. I would be happy to talk to you or anyone from your group …

LETTER: Melrose Clergy Association Speaks Out on Violence

Several church and temple officials signed the Letter to the Editor focused on violence.

[Editor's note: The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by the Melrose Clergy Association.] The members of the Melrose Clergy Association continue to grieve and reflect upon last month’s tragic massacre of children and adults in Newtown Connecticut; and we continue to pray for the precious children, their families, their teachers, and those first responders and public servants who raced to offer their aid and comfort as this devastating event unfolded. We pray that the God of love and truth will surround the community of Newtown, and inspire and enable other communities, like our own, to find ways to ensure the peace and safety of our children. In the wake of such senseless violence and loss of innocent life, we stand firmly …

LETTER: Mayor Dolan Weighs in on State Cuts

"The question, in my opinion, is not whether we should reduce but how that reduction should be made and how it should be articulated to the public."

Last week the governor announced that the state currently faces a $540 million shortfall in Fiscal Year 2013. He is seeking permission from the legislature to make $225 million in program cuts, using his 9C budget powers. Within those amounts, $28.75 million in cuts are being proposed as reductions to municipal and public education accounts. As a mayor, I understand that when a new budget goes into effect on July 1, that budget is a living and breathing document that adjusts both positively and negatively by the month and sometimes by the week. If budgets were perfect, there would be no need for managers. In the past, when the state has seen returns that were better than expected, the governor and the legislature have been generous in …

The following is a letter by Melrose Mayor Rob Dolan to Department of Conservation and Recreation Commissioner Edward Lambert on the Ravine Road one-way trial period.

[Editor's note: The following is a letter by Melrose Mayor Rob Dolan to Department of Conservation and Recreation Commissioner Edward Lambert on the Ravine Road one-way trial period.] Commissioner Edward Lambert Department of Conservation & Recreation 251 Causeway Street, Suite 600 Boston, MA 02114 Re: Ravine Road – Melrose/Stoneham Dear Commissioner Lambert: On behalf of the citizens of Melrose, I write to express my stern opposition to any effort to continue the current, unsafe and hazardous temporary traffic configuration along Ravine Road between Woodland Road and the Fellsway East. I applaud Mayor Dolan for doing his job, representing the people of Melrose who took the time to contact him and attend the meetings. In his letter, does he not call for alternative solutions which are mutually beneficial to all parties involved? "Need a New Mayor of Melrose," post something more practical rather than just bash him. The current solution does not solve the issue of people bombing …   more ›

LETTER: Dolan Advocates for Police Communications

The $450,000 measure would fund 'long-overdue' replacements to the city's dispatch system.

[Editor's note: The following is a Letter from Mayor Rob Dolan to the Melrose Board of Aldermen.] Dear Member of the Board of Aldermen, I am writing to express my strongest support for Order 2013-52, authorization of a bond in the amount of $450,000 for new radio dispatch equipment and associated upgrades to the Melrose Police Department. This money will be used to fund several long-overdue upgrades to the police radio system and the dispatch area. The new radio system complies with FCC mandates and is more reliable than the current system, which is so old that it can no longer be supported properly. In addition, the new system will have mapping capability, and the dispatchers will be able to view photos of the area to see, for instance, …
