Dr. Carl Conui, who has performed surgeries at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, helped people injured during the Boston Marathon bombings on Monday afternoon.
When bombs were detonated near the finish line at the Boston Marathon on Monday afternoon, Dr. Carl Conui described the scene as a "war zone." Conui, 44, of Stoneham, who works at New England Foot & Ankle Specialists which has offices in Reading and Somerville, has served as a volunteer at the Boston Marathon for about 15 years. He also has performed surgeries at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. Common Foot Ailments on Race Day At past marathons, Conui said that the typical types of injuries he has dealt with include blisters, damage to nails, sprains, strains, assisting with physical therapy and dehydration issues that cropped up at last year's race due to the hot weather. After Attorney General Martha Coakley recently ruled that Massachusetts communities cannot prohibit medical marijuana dispensaries from opening in towns and cities but can implement zoning regulations, according to the Boston Globe, city officials in Melrose are weighing their options before moving forward. Coakley struck down a Wakefield bylaw that would have barred the marijuana dispensaries, but also separately approved a bylaw adopted in Burlington that places a moratorium on the facilities until the town completes a further study of zoning issues, according to the Globe report. Here's a look at some of the stories making headlines from the region this week: Arlington Head-On Collision on Mystic Valley Parkway in Arlington Injures Two: Two people were injured at about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday when a 2005 Jaguar X-Type and 2001 Dodge Stratus collided head-on on Mystic Valley Parkway, at Hayes Street. Patricia Randall, 64, of Arlington, who was driving the Jaguar, and 19-year-old Jose Santos, of Boston, the Dodge’s driver, were both taken by ambulance to area hospitals with minor injuries, according to Trooper Kenneth Gaetz, a State Police spokesman. I'm not sure what your argument is here. Are there potential side effects to using any sort of drug? Yep. Do dumb people abuse drugs (prescribed and illegal)? Sure do.
