ReplyI wrote a letter to the Mayor, and encourage others to do so, as well. Perhaps this tragedy will provide the catalyst for change, and something good can come out of an awful incident.

ReplyThere is a crosswalk where this incident occurs, but drivers rarely stop there. The only one where I truly feel safe crossing is in front of the Highlands church. Drivers go way too fast down Franklin Street, and rarely seem to be looking for pedestrians, despite the existence of crosswalks at Vinton, on the west side of the tracks, at Tremont, and at Pratt.

ReplyOverall, I was happy with the snow removal efforts. I just question the methodology, since it seems to make the removal more work overall, at least from my perspective.

They chose to feature this article on Facebook this morning, and the date on the article is 5am today. That's sloppy.

ReplyThe map on WHDH's website predicts less than 1" for us. This is what passes for news?

On the article How Would You Rate Melrose’s Plowing During the Blizzard of 2013?

ReplyI agree. I don't understand why they plow a single lane down the middle of the street, leaving huge piles of snow in the street. It would seem to me to make sense to do it right from the start, instead of having to send front loaders to go fix it later. I can accept the streets not being precisely curb-to-curb, but they should at a minimum be able to accommodate two cars passing one another. Also, what I saw of the sidewalk plowed routes in my neighborhood was atrocious. I don't know how middle and high school kids are supposed to cross the streets safely - at least the elementary kids have crossing guards to help with visibility.

ReplyThe sidewalks on Franklin Street are an utter mess. The sidewalk plow may have taken a pass, but several intersections are treacherous, particularly the one with Chipman Ave, and there is a huge pile at the train tracks.

ReplyI saw something on the NWS that said that Melrose had 26.5" as of 6am Saturday. There was definitely well over 2' at my house, although when we drove over to Whip Hill to go snowshoeing, there seemed to be slightly less snow there.

On the article Are Melrose Roads Clear?

ReplyI know that the DPW folks have been working hard, and I am the first to admit that I know absolutely nothing about operating snow removal equipment bigger than a shovel. That said, I don't know how it's possible that the streets in my neighborhood (Henry Ave, West Highland Ave, and Cliff Street) are in worse shape than they were yesterday. Henry is barely one car wide, and all of the streets have 4-6" of slushy mess, more at the intersections. And the catch basins are under 6+ feet of snow, because the roads aren't nearly plowed curb to curb. I just don't get it.

The reflective signs already exist at a couple of the crosswalks, and they get hit on a regular basis. I'm not sure they are very effective, but I can't imagine they hurt, either.
