On the article Are Melrose Roads Clear?
Shane Egan
12:34 pm on Sunday, February 10, 2013
ReplyNo, they haven't been touched in my neighborhood since Saturday morning. It was such a strong response up to that point. But since then, nothing. Other area towns are doing much better than Melrose with their snow removal. Something went wrong. And now they've canceled school for Monday. I guess 36 hours after the end of the snow was not enough to clean up 7 schools. Wow! We'll see if other area towns call off school tomorrow before deciding if Melrose's response was a #Fail or #EpicFail

On the article Melrose DPW Tackling Post-Blizzard Problems

ReplyFor the first 18-24 hours of the storm(Friday morning to Saturday early morning, it seemed like we were hearing the plows every hour or so. The roads, while covered with snow, seemed like they were good enough for emergency vehicles should they be needed. Then, by around Noon on Saturday until now, nothing...The road is still covered with the same two inches of packed snow. I live on a steep hill, Boston Rock Road, and any small car would not be able to get up it. My wife was driving this morning and said that the roads were terrible on Main Street and West Wyoming. As soon as she passed the Stoneham line, the streets were bare to the pavement. How are other areas of Melrose doing? It seems like someone dropped the ball here???

On the article Readers Say No to Mayor's Proposed Pay Raise
Shane Egan

ReplyI understand the general concern that a 26% raise seems too high. Compared to the average 2-3% raises that most employees in good standing would receive, this seems excessive. However, in the business world and in government, there comes a time when "market adjustments" must be made to reduce inequities in pay. Compared to other area mayors and town managers, this is clearly what is needed here. Melrose needs a full time mayor who can put in many hours managing our government. We need to have a market adjustment in the mayor's pay. If you look at the list of highest paid city employees, the Mayor's job is relatively low on the list after several school positions and a slew of police officers.

On the article Readers: Roads Slick Around the City
Shane Egan
10:58 am on Wednesday, January 16, 2013
ReplyThe roads around the schools were untouched this morning by plows. Sidewalks were icy and the driving was dangerous. We should have had a 2-hour delay this morning. I wonder if the fact that other towns in our immediate area were not delaying school had the "peer pressure effect" of doing nothing in Melrose...

On the article State Police Spread Awareness on Use of Headphones While Driving
Shane Egan
11:10 am on Thursday, December 6, 2012
ReplyThis is just another waste of State and local police resources. Why is the state in my car again. There is no difference between wearing ear buds and listening to music loudly on a car stereo. Will car stereos soon be required to have limited volumes?
If hearing is so critical to driving safely, should the state now take away the privilege to drive from deaf people? Of course not. This is just an example of the state overreacting. Leave me be.

On the article Ragucci: Chances Are 'Great' That Ravine Road Becomes a Two-Way Again
Shane Egan
7:05 am on Thursday, November 15, 2012
ReplyI understand that Selectman DePinto has constituents that he needs to answer to, but the argument that Melrose residents should use Melrose roads to get home is ludicrous. Imagine if Melrose made Franklin St one-way, inconveniencing thousands of Stoneham residents. Enough is enough. The people in the Stoneham side of Ravine Road bought their houses knowing that there was a fair amount of traffic on that street. If there wasn't, they would have paid a lot more for their homes.
