Last Day to Register for Tourney, A Blood Drive & This Day in History

5 things you need to know today, Wednesday, Aug. 7.

1. Clear skies: Wednesday will be clear in the morning then partly cloudy this afternoon. Highs in the lower 80s.

2. This day in Melrose history: Aug. 7, 1942 - Two automobiles were “lassoed” when a six by 24 foot cloth target being towed by an Army plane accidentally cut loose and landed on the roof of Wyoming Pharmacy at Wyoming Ave. and Cleveland St. The rope - nearly a mile long - landed nearby and wrapped itself around two vehicles as it fell. The cars escaped damage, according to press reports.

3. Sullivan Family Blood Drive: The annual blood drive, held in honor of Melrose firefighter Neil Sullivan, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at VFW Post 2394. The Sullivan family organizes the event every year after Neil’s life was saved by 23 blood transfusions in 2005, following injuries he sustained responding to a three-alarm fire.
